Ocella Injury Lawyers

Have you experienced a stroke, heart attack, blood clots or other serious health problems while taking Ocella? You should know that this popular birth control pill could be to blame. Ocella contains a synthetic type of progestin - drospirenone - that makes it riskier than other contraceptives.

Women around the country have filed lawsuits claiming that Ocella caused them to suffer from blood clots, heart attacks, strokes and other life-threatening side effects. It is expected that many other Ocella lawsuits will be filed in the future. These plaintiffs claim that the maker of Ocella did not provide adequate warnings about drospirenone side effects.

Our Ocella injury lawyers are offering free case evaluations to the victims of Ocella side effects. If you suffered a blood clot, heart attack, stroke or other serious health problem while taking Ocella, we want to hear from you. You may be entitled to compensation for your medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.

Ocella Side Effects

Ocella is a generic drug made by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, but marketed and distributed by Barr Laboratories, Inc. Ocella prevents ovulation by working against the usual body chemistry to suppress endogenous gonadotropin. This inhibits ovulation and alters other changes associated with the menstrual cycle.

Drospirenone is a relatively newer type of progestin that is also found in Yaz and Yasmin. While other birth control pills increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and blood clots, those with drospirenone carry added risk.

Drospirenone can increase potassium levels in the blood, which can lead to a condition known as hyperkalemia. This condition can lead to many other health problems, including heart rhythm disturbances and blood clots. Untreated, hyperkalemia can be fatal.

Since early 2004, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has received over 50 reports of deaths in women who were taking drospirenone-containing contraceptives. The deaths were caused by a variety of ailments, including cardiac arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, intracardiac thrombus (blood clots in the heart), pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs) and stroke in women in their child bearing years. Some of those fatalities involved women as young as 17.

Several studies have found an increased risk of health problems with drospirenone contraceptives. In April 2002, the Dutch College of General Practitioners recommended that older second generation birth control pills be prescribed in lieu of drospirenone-containing Yasmin. This recommendation was made as a result of 40 cases of venous thrombosis among women taking Yasmin.

In February 2003, the British Medical Journal published a report from the Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre detailing five additional reports of thromboembolism, including 2 deaths. The drospirenone-containing pill Yasmin was suspected as the cause.

Ocella Injury Lawsuit

Ocella side effects can be devastating, and while no amount of money can make up for these injuries, it is important that Bayer and Barr be made accountable for marketing such a dangerous product. That is why our Ocella injury lawyers are currently pursuing lawsuits against these companies.
